There is something unnatural about this birth control lybrel that completely stops your period. What do you ladies think about this? :?

I agree that it'd be weird to not bleed once a month (since it is an affirmation that u are not pregnant, and also characteristics of ur periods signify if ur healthy or not), but i am one that suffers horribly from cramps and aches all over once a month....and I mean I SUFFER!!....
of course I have no need for something like this now...unless i were to just use it for the cramps....but there will probably be a day later when I will. I know when I get married in the future I don't want to have children right away...I'd like some time alone with the hubby first ;) lol

I agree Halfie. I would be nice to stop this curse, but it just feels unsafe. I'd be too afraid of blood clogs and stuff like that. Plus, it needs to be on the market for a few years before I trust it. There are so many medicines out there that seem alright but after a couple years, you hear so many cases of death and major side effects.

I soooooooo totally agree with u. I was thinking the same thing about it had to be on market for years before trusting it. Also, I am always uneasy about taking meds, because of side effects that can occur from them. The only thing i take right now for my cramps is ibuprofen, but my doctor prescribes a high dosage for me, 'cause nothing else works...midol doesn't even work for me, and it's made for this stuff.

I also don't like taking medicine. But with me, since I don't take medicine often, they work really good when I do take them. But Lord help us all when those cramps come on board.

I would never take any medicine for pain, let alone stop it all together
Or the birth control pills - those are a big No No for me lol.
I'd rather suffer with the pains & cramps than stop it at all.

the thing is i don't take medicine often and still many of it just doesn't work....i don't even take the ibuprofen every time i feel pain from the cramps, my mom always nags at me to go take it...but i end up doing it once or twice the whole time...it was pretty bad the last time, i had to take six 200mg tablets of ibuprofen in the morning (about 9:30am) and it only lasted til about 1:30pm :/...when i went home i took just three more, tho, i don't like being reliant on meds, so i just normally take the suffering until it is unbearable and that day it was, the night before i didn't sleep (which since i already have sleeping issues is really bad), i tossed, turned, and moaned all night :(

6 200mg pills? Your body will become immune to this, regardless of how many times you take it. Try out some other methods. Sleeping always works for me, as well as the heating pads. Exercise and eating healthy will also minimze your cramps.

trust me, nothing works...i usually just take the pain until it becomes too much and then i take the meds....other than that I don't take them. My mom had for awhile bought these other meds that weren't ibuprofen (sadly i can't remember what they are called, the brand was equate or something) and were 500mg each, and i only had to take about 3 and they worked, but she forgot and bought ibuprofen instead so now i must wait til these are finished, 'cause i'd hate for her to have wasted money :/...lol

trust me, u get your body used 2 something, it won't change. I used 2 always take 2 tablets of Motrin 800mg... 1600mg total every 3 hours. My mind thought I needed to control the cramps everytime I got a pain. When I realized how immune I was to these meds and how addicted I got, I decided to bear it for a few months with home remedies and many hours laying in bed. Usually the position of your body helps when it comes to cramps. Eventually, your cramps will be at least tolerable. This is not even an issue wth me. Oh and your age does play a factor in this. Your body will go through its ups and downs and hopefully it will get better. ;)

I don't think u should but it's your body, your choice. Having your period is very healthy and it flushes out your system. Who knows what side effects may attribute to having it only once per year. Sounds risky to me and it sounds like your reproductive system may slow down. Then again, I'm not a doctor and doctors don't really know the answers themselves.
BTW halfchaldo... u may want to check and see if you actually have endometriosis. It could be the cause of these horrible cramps and pains. It's easily treatable so you may want to see an OBGYN about this

LOL, i was being sarcastic ne way. I don't trust many meds mostly for the side effects that can occur. Later on when I'm married and I don't want to be over populated with children like my parents....lol....I will probably take some form of birth control, but I did mention before, i think in my first post, that your period is one way of seeing if your body is healthy...so even though I suffer through it I won't get rid of it entirely.
And u made a good point of something that did run through my mind and that's it sounds like the reproductive system would probably slow down....and that is something I don't want. I plan on having kids at some point in the future, I don't want to be like a co-worker of mine who sadly has endometriosis (one of her two sisters has it as well and was only able to conceive children through in-vitro)...she doesn't have children but I can tell she wishes she did.
I have already been to my OBGYN btw on this topic...she believes it is partially from other reasons that i cramp so much....plus a co-worker once told me that many times the pains u go through when u're on ur period is your body's way of preparing you for when you are actually pregnant and in labor...and I don't just suffer from cramps, my body aches from my feet to my hips and lower back...(tell me that doesn't sound like the pain pregnant women feel lol).
hahaha i think you're in for a surprise when u go into labor lol

That's ridiculous. Why suffer those pains if you don't need to.
This is also nonsense about flushing out your system. The only "stuff" that comes out is the lining of the uterus. If the uterus doesn't "prepare" itself for implantation of a fertilized egg (which it won't if you are interfering with the release of the egg), there is nothing to "flush out."
Up until the time I was 18 I had very irregular cycles and no doctor thought there was anything wrong with that. (Ironic that I ovulated and had periods like 3 times a year while I was a teenager and still got pregnant the first time I had sex! I should have been so lucky witht he lottery). So I'm gonna talk to my gyn and if he thinks its a good idea, i'm gonna do it.

Hmm, sure makes a lot of sense :? ... So when your gynecologist told you to start using Ortho Evra, you figured if he thinks its a good idea, it must be. However, now there are so many women who are having complications all due to this contraceptive. A woman died from this form of birth control in 2004. But then again, who cares... your gyn told u its cool. Point is, they only perform a limited study with these meds on so many women. It isn't until they are released in the market and you start to truly find out the side effects these meds actually have. The FDA has removed numerous drugs off the market. My advice was to wait and see if there are complications but then again, you can be our Guinea pig!

Just like I'd never expose my body to cigarettes and alcohol or even drugs such as marijuana, I won't try to mess with my biology in anyway that may in fact make things worse off for me in the future. The side effects are unknown with this drug. And who knows how my body would react to it. Something that always worried me is the idea that I won't be able to have kids in the future. In my eyes children are blessings...and u know what, what doesn't kill me, will only make me stronger. My mom also had issues with her periods, not the same as me, but she had some nonetheless. When she had her last two kids (who are twins) she was up walking around that same night, now that is strength. Sorry if I am one that doesn't give in to weaknesses. It's just not in my nature.
The only thing I have to worry about is having the rest of the world run around my cycle...but that just isn't plausible lol. You can't always skip out on work or school just 'cause you're cramping.
And another thing u failed to notice, that i have mentioned a couple times already, is a woman's period is a way for her to know if she is well or not. If you aren't well physically or mentally (for example stress) your period actually portrays that something is off by the thickness of the blood, rate of flow, color, and how often you have it. If you pay attention to such details you can pretty much have a heads up on your health. If something is off, you can go in and have a check up with the doctor (besides stress, this can be worked out w/a doctor), and whatever is the problem can be caught in time....w/out it being too late. It's actually quite useful.

I'm not telling anyone to use it or not use it. I know how drug testing is done. Its done on the basis of statistics, the same statistics psychologists use in psychometric testing. My gyn and I will weigh the benefits and the detriments. It seems to me that there are benefits to this one given the fact that I already use Seasonale. It's great to be an American and have options. I guess I'm just a leader in these things. Everyone warned me that I'd go blind after my Lasik surgery 6 years ago. Well my vision is still 20/20.

There's a lot better ways to know if you are healthy than to examine your menstrual blood and vaginal mucosa. A healthy diet, regular excercise, and regular medical exams with pap smears.
As for stress, are you saying that you wait for your period each month to know if you are stressed? I'm surprised because I usually know immediately whether or not I am stressed.
If your menstrual pains are so severe that you can't function, I don't understand why you'd put up with that. (Oh, I do put alcohol and recreational drugs in my system, so maybe that's the difference between us.)

Well I've always had 20/20 vision and I still foresee that this drug may have many side effects we do not know of as of yet. I really could care less what you do with your body and what you inject it with. I simply stated a precaution that women should face and not always agree to do what's the "in" thing. Observing is not always a bad thing. Point is, there are just some things that are ok to take risks with but never when it comes 2 your body. You can be a leader and opt for this option but then again, I think I'd rather lead in other areas of life.... birth control not being a factor that defines me or the fact that I'm what u call a "leader."

I'm not saying that i routinely check out my periods to see if i'm healthy or whatever, sheesh. I'm just saying even w/exercising eating healthy and all, sometimes things within your body aren't right, and you may not know this from outward appearance. And yeah, u could go to the routinely checkups...(since i have no health insurance i rarely go to the doctors...and i'm sure i'm not the only one) But ne way, one thing i know is if u miss a period or are it comes late, it doesn't always have to do with being pregnant, many times stress is the problem or maybe even illness. And sometimes ppl don't always realize they're stressing, maybe they are the type of person that stresses over anything..?....but ne way, that wasn't what was important :/ (i think i'm rambling lol)
My thing is there are just some things that shouldn't be messed with. One would be the reproductive system. If i'm not having my period for a long period of time, what if the body just stops the reproductive cycle all together? That is a possibility. It is a risk I most definitely am not willing to take.
And I'm guessing you're correct...that must be the difference between us. I'm just usually cautious to what I expose my body to.

Nor does birth control define me. But as women we are defined by our menstrual cycles. Men do not experience the rise and flow of hormones (and hence emotions). I am fully convinced that women will not become truly equal to men until we can get these hormones (and hence emotions) under control.
My fiance is a very successful man, but he is fully supportive of my ambitions to wealth and power. I am very lucky to have found him. (and he is very lucky to have found me). When we marry in November, we have already discussed with the priest that we can write into our vows that we will respect each other's right to independence. For me, freeing me from the burden of my period until I want to have children (if I do decide to do that) is key to that independence.

:disgusted: I believe in natural birthing...the "Old Fashion" way. When you mess with nature, things don't always become right. And I have read a novel on such a topic, and omg, if that ever happens on Earth I hope I am long gone and dead as well as my great great great grandchildren.
Yes, technology is beautiful and magnificent, but there are just some things that shouldn't be messed with.
Yeah, yeah, I said what if i can't reproduce anymore and you gave me cloning, and though I think everyone's opinion is for their own, and wouldn't think less of anyone that went through it...it's not for me.
Conceiving a child, going through the pregnancy, and giving birth are all special moments that a test tube cannot replace. And I pray to God that I never have to go through the worries of not being able to reproduce (for when I'm ready).

I'm actually very surprised you gave me this answer. So let me get this straight, in order to be equal to men, we have to hide the mere fact that we get our menstrual cycle and exclude it from getting in the way of life??? Women are more dominant with estrogen and men are dominant with testosterone. Who says that men are better off with low doses of estrogen? Your whole concept contradicts who you always claim to be because you have to control how feminine you are by your hormones. In order to be a feminist, you should'nt have to change a thing about yourself nor do you have to try and persuade the other gender that your body can function like theirs. The whole beauty in being a women is that you don't have to and men should appreciate the difference between our bodies and respect us at the same time. And another thing.... mens' bodies can go through changes monthly and can have what you call a "menstrual cycle." They go through a world of emotional rollercoasters themselves. They just don't have the physical conditions and proof we as women go through, but that does not mean it doesn't happen. This theory has been presented by both doctors and psychologists.
BTW, I don't know about you but I'm NOT defined by my menstrual cycle. I think it's an incredible and beautiful thing that women can carry a child and give birth. I would never jeopardize this nor would I try to mirror another gender to get equality. We'll just have to keep fighting for it if we look at equality in this manner until we become men ourselves. I guess that would solve the whole issue.. right? :disgusted:
