Who here has realized by now that the Chaldean diet, at least as it is in America, could use some improvement so that we don't all just gain 100 lbs when we have kids and whatnot? Not to mention, who else hates how people are practically trying to shove food down your throat whenever you trying to eat a more nutritious diet?

I am so excited that you started this thread!! I'm giving short answers cause I'm busy at work....

first suggestion: brown rice
second suggestion: less salt
third suggestion: bake certain things instead of fry..not ALL the time, and not all foods, but for example felafel can be baked.
fourth suggestion - EXERCISE - it seems like chaldean women really only exercise before their wedding...and not before and not after. That explains A LOT.

I read somewhere some years back that Middle-Eastern food is some of the healthiest food in the world, but I suppose it's what some people use to cook it with sometimes that can make it deadly. Haha

Actually I heard that was the Mediterranean diet (which is somewhat similar, but not quite) from our own diets.

Overall though, think about it, Kabob and chicken tikka are usually grilled, even our maraka is pretty much healthy, considering that it's mostly made up of tomato paste. Dolma is stuffed grape leaves, although some people use some really fatty oil when they cook it. I think our food's great. lol But Orgazmo's right about them shoving it down your throat when you're trying to avoid it, especially the deserts!

Tikka is okay, kebab is NOT, because most people use ground chuck, which is full of saturated fat. Not to mention how much salt people use in it. Maraka itself isn't bad, but is usually pretty salty. Not to mention that it's served with white rice, which is full of simple carbs and virtually no fiber. Dolma isn't as good as we think. There really isn't much protein or fiber in it, since only a little meat is used, and the rest is rice. It's like sushi--it's not bad for you, but there's lots of other things that are a better choice. Plus, you can't get full off of it.

The only nutritious and healthy things in our diet (and really, the only ones I can imagine) are of course hummus and tapuli.

those are NOT the only nutritious and healthy foods in our diet!! What about pakota, gur gur (sp?) lol, gus, dude there's lots of stuff! And kabob can be made with ground round which tastes just as good with the right seasonings.

kibbe hamith, the maraqa w/ the rice is always healthy! its pieces of meat and veggies in a tomato stew. So the rice needs to be changed to brown and there you go.

Ok, don't blame Chaldean food for you being a fatass. I highly doubt you exercise, that's for one.

But I'm sure most Chaldean mothers are like my mother, she would do anything for me. This also applies to my diet, but I can't put it in terms of "mom, instead of making pacha, make me a low fat chicken burger and hold the mayo." If they actually understand you, then they might get pissed that you are abandoning her food for its American counterpart. Instead, embrace our food.

The Chaldean diet is one of the best diets out there, if you actually know what to ask for and how to eat it. If you stray away, you will become a qalaafa (big person)..

Here are some foods that actually are really good for you, only found in the Chaldean Middle Eastern diet..It is just a starter list..start thinking and you'll see the good in Chaldean cuisine.:

1. Hommous - a lot of fiber, good so it will not make you feel hungary. It actually makes you feel fuller, making you want to eat less. Besides eating it with plain processed white pita bread, go for its healthy counterpart and eat it with whole wheat pita bread. And if you are really trying to get healthy, replace the carbs with a romaine lettuce spar. Also, extra virgin olive oil should be used on the hommous as the oil topping, and that serves as an anti-coagulant for the heart.

2. Tabbouli - wow. I don't know how this dish could ever be prepared unhealthily. The cracked wheat (burghur), oil, lemon, parsley, and garlic all are EXCELLENT sources to help you lose weight, and get healthier.

3. Dolma - no, not the actual grape leaves. Search in the damn pot, where you will find stuffed tomatoes, stuffed red & green peppers, and other vegetables. The vegetables are good for the heart, especially the tomatoe, whose skin has a high concentration of lycopene, which is truly excellent for the heart. Also, use whole wheat rice or brown rice, and also, the meat serves as a great source of protein in small amounts. Also, the carrots in the pot are a good source of high glycemic carbs, which are especially good after working out, so they can rejuvenate damaged muscles during exercise and weight training.

4. Chicken Kabob - No need to explain. Make sure you use good cuts of chicken breast, and BBQ or put it on the George Foreman grill, and add veggies to it.

5. Rizza with grilled chicken and almonds- use brown rice. Use lean chicken. And use almonds, which are heart healthy, and another great source of fiber.

6. Libban - virtually all Chaldean mothers get into a screaming match about whose libban is the best. Well, go get some damn libban! It has a lot of calcium, is homemade and made naturally, and gives you the good fat you need. Also, it is proven that eating dairy three times a day will help you lose your midsection.

7. Salads - every Chaldean diet consists of a salad. Use GREEN GREEN GREEN. Broccoli, green peppers, romaine lettuce, and spinach, to name a few. Make a lowfat vinageratte, I usually just use oil and vinegar, but if I feel like I should need a tang, I add fresh squeezed lemon. But don't overindulge on the lemon, it is bad for the teach because it is highly acidic (not like H2SO4 but you know..lol)

8. Fish - I'll be honest, I don't like masgoof or whatever, but you can get it good to be really healthy for you. It has Omega-3 fatty acids found in high concentrations (in carrots too, but less)..so that is definitely good for the heart.

walking is not for everyone...but I have my ipod on me if I'm walking or running so I don't get bored - plus I usually do it outside, weather permitting. I walk to the video store and stuff like that all the time. It sounds little but it does count as part of a bigger workout plan.

My body looks great; I have a nice ass, and amazing stomach and good shape…

but i just need some moree and it will be perfect

I'm sure it looks great NOW, but with poor eating habits you are doing yourself an un-favor for your future figure and cellulite is one thing that increases with fatty foods, especially deep fried foods.

You need more of what?

hey if youre starting with a flat stomach, do you see abs? If not, I recommend hula hoop! sounds funny, but works.

Ok, don't blame Chaldean food for you being a fatass. I highly doubt you exercise, that's for one.

Good one.

My particular problem is that since I'm much bigger than most people (think a slimmer version of Kevin James), that it takes a lot of food, and a lot of preparation for me to make sure I'm getting what I need to not go into starvation mode. Particularly when I'm trying to put on muscle mass, which is what my goal is right now--it takes me about 450-500 grams of protein a day in order to do that. To give you an idea of how much food that is, that would be about:

6 eggs - 40 grams of protein

Sandwich with half-a pound of turkey breast - 60 grams of protein

Protein shake - 80 grams of protein

Protein bar - 30 grams of protein

Another shake - 80 grams of protein

1 lb uncooked chicken breast - another 80 grams of protein

2 cans of tuna - 60 grams of protein

And then another shake before bed - 80 grams of protein

Add that all together...

And that's 510 grams of protein, in ONE DAY. Granted, this is how much I'd have to eat if I was putting on muscle. Just to maintain would be about a little more than half of that, which is still a lot of food, and costs lots of money. Yes, I ate this much for two months straight, and it was not cheap. Not even including all the fruits and veggies and other things I ate too.

Point being, the typical Chaldean diet doesn't have enough protein to support someone as big as me, which is to say someone with the build of a linebacker.

typical home cooked food that we all are familiar with, i drink lots of energy drinks (i know those r bad for dieting purposes), fast food crap like BK, taco hell, and such; candy, popcorn (with extra, heavy, coronary atherosclorsis causing butter *but it tasts so damn good*).

i think the only thing that i eat that is healthy is probibly home cooked food (healthy but not ideal for a diet) and drinking gatorade...thats it...i should be dead by now.lol

for snacks - cold crunchy vegetables are good. Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, cucumber, tomato slices, the possibilities are endless. Make it fresh and good. If you want something to dip them in, try hommous or yogurt.

If you must have popcorn they come in 100 calorie packs now. As a major popcorn lover myself, I buy these now and when I'm really craving it I'll have some but I know that one bag is only 100 cal and YES they do come with butter!

Fruit makes a wonderful snack if you are craving something sweet. Frozen grapes are soooo wonderful. Fruit smoothies are easy to make - banana, strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, add some honey and ice and yogurt and there you go. You can even add protein powder in there if you want ( I don't, but you can).

Home cooking is where the heart of food lies....just make wise choices when you can. Do you cook? Who cooks in your house and what do they cook? give me some specific examples and maybe we can figure something out.

Gatorade is ok in moderation but it is very high in sodium, which can slow your system down if you have too much.

And fast food is incredibly nasty - suggested reading: Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. That should do it for ya. I have no problem using scare tactics to combat that problem. You should think of your new plan as 'food on the go' rather than fast food. There are lots of things you can take with you. Do you have a microwave or refridgerator during the day? Hopefully yes, but if not - do not worry my friend, we shall come up with something.

the purpose of sodium in Gatorade is for electrolyte balance, which become vitally important as one excursuses and the inevitable drop of electrolytes from sweet will take place...even though sodium can cause HTN, but the ingredients’ in Gatorade is not enough to do that.

Vegetables r excellent antioxidants against cancer, i should eat allot of that, but they don’t taste good at all, they r nasty...i gotta dip em in something, whats something thats healthy and taste good that i can dip em in?

for sweet stuff, ill try what u said, instead of the candy i eat.

Just don't overkill on the Gatorade, and water will go a long way to combat dehydration.

You don't need to stay away from the meat, chicken, and rice - just stay away from anything deep fried, and keep your portions under control. It is better to eat 2 half dinners 3 hours apart than to pig out at one sitting and then crave junk later...you dig?

answer the question - do you have a microwave and/or refridgerator when you're out of the home?

#1 cheap protein = eggs, especially egg whites - you can make omelettes - and add veggies and herbs to them and red/black pepper to season them. There is so much you can do with eggs.

#2 cheap protein - BEANS - learn them, love them, they are good for you. Beans and rice have a bad rep but they are not! Lentils (red, brown and green for variation) I'm talking fresh not canned. Red beans, black beans, kidney beans, navy beans....I could go on, I know that must be a surprise to you but I can!

Well...I'm trying not to make beans a protein staple. Beans are high in phytoestrogens, which increase estrogen levels in men. Estrogen for men = bad, especially if I need my testosterone levels to increase to build muscle mass.

Any other suggestions?

dude, you can certainly handle one or two meals per week consisting of beans as the major protein source - it will help, not hurt...I am trying to think cheap here for ya.

also - lean meats and chicken - you really should pay attention however you can when this stuff is on sale, buy a lot and freeze it. I'm serious. I am assuming you don't use that option, am I right?

soybeans (frozen, you can boil them), tofu

tuna (not for me, but maybe for you?)

cottage cheese, yogurt, milk

nuts, seeds, peanut butter, tahin

good ole ground beef - its cheap. sirloin OR if not then drain the fat before you eat it with anything. (home made tacos?? I eat mine with pita)

Where do you learn about nutrition. Everything you said, I learned it from 6 years of reading Men's Health magazine. I swear we belong together, only if you were younger :?

But for orgazmo, I suggest eating beef if you want to bulk up. Just eat and eat beef. That is the best source of protein. Not necessarily the best, but it is cheap and will make you the biggest.

BTW, I am currently drinking a vanilla whey peanut butter protein shake with ice in order to force growth and recovery at the same time, after my weight training (I just got back)...it is sooooooooooooooo goood!

Over the past few years, my research includes reading in books, online, reputable magazines, talking to experts, and personal experiences. I just do my own research, compare/contrast information and come up with my own conclusions. Much of this information is factual, so its just a matter of reading it and memorizing it, then putting it to good use.

I have considered doing something in the nutrition field, but dietary/nutritional experts (who want to make real money for their time) are usually limited to working with patients in the hospital who have special needs...like AIDS patients, stuff like that...and my heart is too soft for that.

As far as fitness, I certainly don't have all the answers. I would have a lot to learn, but that is a good idea I could consider, but honestly I'd rather work with food. Not in a restaurant but catering nice gourmet food for reeeeeeeally well off people with no time to do it themselves.

For Pinky:

Beyond the six pack: the psychological benefits of exercise by Dr. Paul Cribb Ph.D. CSCS. AST Director of Research Exercise has benefits beyond the physical. When thinking of the benefits of exercise, we often think only of the physical and physiological benefits such as increased muscle mass, strength and decreased body fat. However, it’s just as important to recognize many psychological benefits from engaging in regular exercise. Exercise is shown to reduce stress and anxiety. In fact, regular exercise is shown to be an effective strategy that can manage anxiety over the long term long-term. Think about how you feel after exercise? Exercise is shown to promote a relaxed but positive mood state. Compared to non-exercisers, people that exercise are shown to have a more optimistic outlook on life. Exercise is linked to a reduction in depression and even used in therapy to help individuals with clinical depression. While the physical benefits of exercise are what attract most of us to the gym, never underestimate the powerful benefits that regular exercise has on your psychological health as well. isometrics...isn't that like pretty much magic? Wishful thinking, I don't know if I believe in that or if its just a hoax. You're supposed to be able to build without lifting? yaaaaaa I don't think so. I don't know too much about it though.

dynamic tension, never heard of it.

no, theyre not a hoax or magic, they are real exercises. its weightless exercises, where you use your own muscles against each other. isometrics is where youre not really moving anythign but use resistence, but dynamic tension has movement in it. with DT it also stretches your muscles in which it always more blood into it. it wont make you massive because it really stretches your muscles, but it can make you as strong as a person twice your size who works out with weights.

ok then I had it all wrong....it might be worth a try, as part of your plan but I would not commit 100%. Keep asking people about it though, you're bound to find someone who has experience.

ok, if you think you can keep up with me :)

there are a few chaldeans that go there but not as many as there should be considering that a lot of chaldeans live nearby...there are a lot of Indians and Asians though, and old people lol

There are weeks where I'm there everyday and there are weeks where I only get to go once or twice, and sometimes I go way too long without going...but average 3-4 days per week. I should do more!

4 days is optimal if u are fit, you need resting days..

here is my plan:

Monday: Legs
Tuesday: calves, chest, biceps
Wednesday: REST
Thursday: Back, traps
Friday: Shoulders, triceps
Saturday: REST
Sunday: REST

With Cardio Every Day for at least 1 hour, but as u can see, i didn't rest today, I did Thursdays workout..I'm going to double up tomorrow on mondays, tuesdays, and thursdays, since i did thursday today

I think this is a very good schedule, you are working all of your major muscle groups and getting your cardio in. Do you do anything like push ups, pull ups, jump rope, stuff like that? If not then maybe one day a week throw something different like that in there. And do you work on abs? Otherwise this looks good. Oh and yes, resting all weekend is fine, I'm not sure what your goals are exactly but it should be ok cause your muscles do need a break to repair.

See, I've been trying to get in for pilates whenever I get out of work on time for the class. Oh, I am very much into the resistance ball - I do squats, lunges, push ups, ab exercises on there and I do it at home. I'm a big fan of jump rope and walking intervals. Oh and hula hoop....lol.

thats totally fine, you can only do the best you can with the time you have - you'd be miserable if you pushed yourself, and you don't want to dread it.

cathy, i actually have nice abs, but i have a little chunk (not much) covering them..i used to be so fit, but college truly ****ed me in the rear..so i have stress fat..but no more!

i'm actually only doing machines and cardio, to lose the weight. i already have the muscles. i am 200 lbs and look like 170lb according to most of my friends, so muscle isn't an issue..i just want to get skinny

Dont get skinny! Just be healthy, do the best you can.

You know whats funny, if I work out too hard I bulk up too much...my pants get tight - I just build very easily for some reason and I guess thats good, but damn. I do have to take breaks every once in a while cause I'm not about to buy all new clothes. Every time I try to ask about it, I never get a straight answer as to why or good advice on what to do...

Thats great about the ab area! Your cardio will take care of the fat there. I have great abs, but they only show if I'm severely dehydraed lol.
