Metabolism is a collection of chemical reactions that take place in the body's cells to convert the fuel in the food we eat into the energy we neet to function.
It's basically the engine that burns calories to fuel the body.
Registered Dietitian Gail Posner recently started testing metabolism in her West Bloomfield office.
It works by breathing into a machine and it measures the amount of oxygen your body uses at rest. The test can estimate how many calories your body burns through basic functions like breathing and circulating blood. Then, add that to the amount of calories you burn through exercise and everyday activities. You will know how many calories you can eat and still lose weight.
Metabolism slows down in your 20s because you start to lose muscle.
Posner said if you continue to eat like you did in your 20s when you are in your 40s, you will gain 4-5 pounds a year.
If you do not eat enough calories, you can also slow down your metabolism because your body assumes you are starving.
Posner said lifting weights is essential to keeping your metabolism up.
Drinking water and eating breakfast are both great ways to keep your metabolism going.
Posner said the key to keeping your metabolism going is to eat several small meals throughout the day.
The test costs $90.
