View Full Version : My Favorite Poems
I love poetry and of course since I was born in Iran, my favorite poets are from there. This one is one of my most favorites, it is a bit long but if you have patience and read it to the end I don't think you will be disappointed, unless that is, that you just don't like poems, which in that case you should stay away from my blog :D
Wild Deer
Where are you O Wild Deer?
I have known you for a while, here.
Both loners, both lost, both forsaken
The wild beast, for ambush, have all waken
Let us inquire of each other's state
If we can, each other's wishes consummate
I can see this chaotic field
Joy and peace sometimes won't yield
O friends, tell me who braves the danger
To befriend the forsaken, behold the stranger
Unless blessed Elias may come one day
And with his good office open the way
It is time to cultivate love
Individually decreed from above
Thus I remember the wise old man
Forgetting such a one, I never can
That one day, a seeker in a land
A wise one helped him understand
Seeker, what do you keep in your bag
Set up a trap, if bait you drag
In reply said I keep a snare
But for the phoenix I shall dare
Asked how will you find its sign
We can't help you with your design
Like the spruce become so wise
Rise to the heights, open your eyes
Don't lose sight of the rose and wine
But beware of your fate's design
At the fountainhead, by the riverside
Shed some tears, in your heart confide
This instrument won't tune to my needs
The generous sun, our wants exceeds
In memory of friends bygone
With spring showers hide the golden sun
With such cruelty cleaved with a sword
As if with friendship was in full discord
When flows forth the crying river
With your own tears help it deliver
My old companion was so unkind
O Pious Men, keep God in mind
Unless blessed Elias may come one day
Help one loner to another make way
Look at the gem and let go of the stone
Do it in a way that keeps you unknown
As my hand moves the pen to write
Ask the main writer to shed His light
I entwined mind and soul indeed
Then planted the resulting seed
In this marriage the outcome is joy
Beauty and soulfulness employ
With hope's fragrant perfume
Let eternal soul rapture assume
This perfume comes from angel's sides
Not from the doe whom men derides
Friends, to friends' worth be smart
When obvious, don't read it by heart
This is the end of tales of advice
Lie in ambush, fate's cunning and vice.

Love Song
My nights are painted bright with your dream, sweet love
and heavy with your fragrance is my breast.
you fill my eyes with your presence, sweet love.
giving me more happiness than grief.
like rain washing through the soil
you have washed my life clean.
you are the heartbeat of my burning body;
a fire blazing in the shade of my eyelashes.
you are more bountiful than the wheat fields,
more fruit-laden than the golden boughs.
against the onslaught of darkening doubts
you are a door thrown open to the suns.
when I am with you, I fear no pain
for my only pain is a pain of happiness.
this sad heart of mine and so much light?
sounds of life from the bottom of a grave?
Your eyes are my pastures, sweet love
the stamp of your gaze burning deep into my eyes.
if I had you within me before, sweet love
I would not take anybody else for you.
oh it's a dark pain, this urge of wanting;
setting out, belittling oneself fruitlessly;
laying one's head on chests hiding a black heart;
soiling one's breast with ancient hatred;
finding a snake in a caressing hand;
discovering venom behind friendly smiles;
putting coins into deceitful hands;
getting lost in the midst of bazaars.
You are my breath of life, sweet love,
you have brought me back to life from the grave.
you have come down from the distant sky,
like a star on two golden wings
silencing my loneliness, sweet love,
Imbuing my body with odors of your embrace.
you are water to the dry streams of my breasts,
you are a torrent to the dry bed of my veins.
in a world so cold and as bleak,
in step with your steps, I proceed.
You are hidden under my skin
flowing through my every cell,
singeing my hair with your caressing hand,
leaving my cheeks sunburned with desire.
you are, sweet love, a stranger to my dress
but so familiar with the fields of my nakedness.
o bright and eternal sunrise,
the strong sunshine of southern climes,
you are fresher than early dawn,
fresher and better-watered than spring-tide.
this is no longer love, it is dazzlement,
a chandelier blazing amidst silence and darkness.
ever since love was awakened in my heart,
I have become total devotion with desire.
this is no longer me, no longer me,
oh wasted are the years I lived with "me."
my lips are the altar of your kisses, sweet love
my eyes watching out for the arrival of your kiss.
You are the convulsions of ecstasy in my body,
like a garment, the lines of your figure covering me.
oh I am going to burst open like a bud,
my joy becoming tarnished for a moment with sorrow.
oh I wish to jump to my feet
and pour down tears like a cloud
This sad heart of mine and burning incense?
music of harp and lyre in a prayer-hall?
this empty space and such flights?
this silent night and so much song?
your gaze is like a magic lullaby, sweet love,
a cradle for restless babies.
your breathing is a breeze half-asleep
washing down all my tremors of anguish;
it is hidden in the smiles of my tomorrows,
it has sunken deep into the depths of my worlds.
You have touched me with the frenzy of poetry;
pouring fire into my songs,
kindling my heart with the fever of love,
thus setting all my poems ablaze, sweet love.

Later On
My death will come someday to me
One day in spring, bright and lovely
One winter day, dusty, distant
One empty autumn day, devoid of joy.
My death will come someday to me
One bittersweet day, like all my days
One hollow day like the one past
Shadow of today or of tomorrow.
My eyes tune to half dark hallways
My cheeks resemble cold, pale marble
Suddenly sleep creeps over me
I become empty of all painful cries.
Slowly my hands slide o’er my notes
Delivered from poetry’s spell,
I recall that once in my hands
I held the flaming blood of poetry.
The earth invites me into its arms,
Folks gather to entomb me there
Perhaps at midnight my lovers
Place above me wreaths of many roses.

When you hear the lovers’ words, think them not a mistake
You don’t recognize these words, the error must be your take.
The here and hereafter cannot tame my spirit and soul
Praise God for all the intrigue in my mind that is at stake.
I know not who resides within my heart
Though I am silent, he must shake and quake.
My heart went through the veil, play a song
Hark, my fate, this music I must make.
I paid no heed, worldly affairs I forsake
It is for your beauty, beauty of the world I partake.
My heart is on fire, I am restless and awake
To the tavern to cure my hundred day headache.
My bleeding heart has left its mark in the temple
You have every right to wash my body in a wine lake.
In the abode of the Magi, I am welcome because
The fire that never dies, in my heart is awake.
What was the song the minstrel played?
My life is gone, but breathing, I still fake!
Within me last night, the voice of your love did break
Hafiz’s breast still quivers and shakes for your sake.

Let Us Be Humans
A dove was nipping seeds,
A weeping willow was dancing,
A sparrow was building a nest,
The Sun was watching.
From atop the aspen trees, dawn was returning.
With swallow’s merriment, daytime was beginning.
Nature’s musicians freely lay on this wide-open grass,
Making music in Dastan and Nava1 modes.
The meadow was decorated like butterfly wings.
The colorful butterfly, flew here and there, Spring.
I’ve witnessed that in every particle of matter
There’s indeed someone’s loving soul, someone’s bright breath!
This pure and caring soul is blown into all.
This bright breeze pours out of earth’s heart
And blows on all.
If eyes are to both the visible and invisible keen,
They would see the commotion within this scene.
Sun, like a mother, full of kindness, gleams.
Down the sky’s pure mirror, light streams.
Earth’s heart beats to the same tune as Time.
Sound waves of music of growth! O, what joyful chime!
Clouds arrive, full of giving and self-sacrifice.
Bestow their necklaces to the fields of rice!
So that grass may sing refreshed, river cries.
To turn sap into rosewater, water tries!
Soil toils to let seeds sprout!
Wind dances so buds may sing aloud!
Bird sings so that rock is not alone,
Sun strives to make amber from the stone!
From afar, grapevine steals kisses from the sun, in hundreds.
So that sheaves of grapes may grow, in hundreds!
Cedar helps the newly rising morning glory
Blissful are those who worship sun and earth
For there’s only love and kindness, no hostilities, no hatred.
Suddenly, tears well up in my eyes
I choke in my burning chest, ah!
But why then can we not be this way?.
Come to our senses and wish to be humans.

The patient nightingale on a branch atop the tree
For the well being of the rose made its plea.
Praise your goodness O rose, and your beauty,
Let not your pride make the nightingale flee.
I complain not of being apart from thee,
In hope of union, I’ll be apart for eternity.
Others delight in pleasure and luxury,
Pain of separation is what delights me.
For nymphs and Paradise, some find the rosary,
Beloved is my nymph, and tavern my garden’s entry.
Drink wine to the music of the harp, be worry free
From he who forbids you joy for God’s mercy.
Hafiz, separation is not at tragedy,
Union in separation, and light in the darkness you see.

An Eternal Farewell
Summer waned and fall drifted in
Beneath a crisp blue sky,
The days grew short, the world yawned wearily
And the wind began to sigh.
The branches of trees bent laden
With leaves of autumn gold,
The long star-filled nights
Were wondrous to behold.
On a day in mid Autumn
The sky burned aflame,
Yet shadows veiled the path
From whence my love came.
Her auburn hair
Wownd like strands of mahogany
As it curled its way
Down shoulders of ivory.
The sea lapped in her eyes,
A deep blue-green,
A child's simplicity abounded in my love,
That no mortal eye has seen.
In a dream I saw,
A messenger in white
His snowy hair and beard flowed long
His garments shone with light.
Knowledge I read in the wells of his eyes
And they twinkled blue as sapphire.
A silver trumpet rang in the night
And the vision kindled fire.
I, the Stray Wanderer, beheld my destiny
For my love had come, at last.
My cup overflowed with gladness
And my burdens fled into the past.
As the messenger departed
I thanked Fate seven times seven,
And the stars glittered like diamonds
On the high beaches of Heaven.
For here at the end of Autumn
Summer laughed anew in me,
On an angel's wings my love had come
And she was mine to be.
The days turned gray, the world a soft white,
Snow blanketed the air.
The wind blew cold, the grass fell withered,
And the branches of trees grew bare.
Then a long sunless day
Began to unfold
And doom came upon me
Unforetold.
The messenger returned
His voice boomed like thunder
"Alas, Alas!
I must rend your paths asunder."
I saw with consternation
His robe ashen black
"What you have received
Fate will now take back."
Then my love spoke words
Of farewell without warning
She would thus leave
And I would wear mourning.
The heart of my love was not given to me
Of that, at last, I felt sure
Beyond the gates of Eternity
This parting would endure.
Winter dragged to its bitter end
As countless times before
And of its cold and desolate days I sang,
For summer sang in me no more.
As a ship setting sail from havens lost forever
This tale has journeyed to its end,
Other tales and other loves I may find
But this love will come not again.

♥ Bird Of Paradise ♥
Saw you flying by
Flash of Turquoise Blue
I just had to try
To keep your life in view
My bird of paradise
Sweet bird of paradise
Wish that I could fly
I'd be beside you now
But I can only sigh
And watch you circle round
My bird of paradise
Sweet bird of paradise
My bird of paradise
Sweet bird of paradise
My bird of paradise
So you fly away
When will you come again
So I can watch you play
In the pouring rain
My bird of paradise
Sweet bird of paradise
My bird of paradise
Sweet bird of paradise
My bird of paradise

The Alley
On a moonlit night, once again
Through the alley, I wandered, without you.
My body, an eye gazing in search of you.
My soul, a cup teeming with anticipation
Of seeing you,
Now, I became the mad lover, anew!
Deep in my soul’s treasure-chest,
A flower, your memory, gleaming.
The garden of a thousand memories, smiling.
The scent of a thousand memories, beaming.
That night, I recalled,
Through the alley, we wandered, side by side.
Wings wide-open, in cherished solitude, soaring.
For a time, by the brook, resting.
You, all the world’s secrets in your black eyes,
I, by your glances, mesmerized.
Clear skies, quiet night,
Faith smiling, time tame.
Moonlight, grapes pouring down into the water.
Tree branches, fingers reaching up to the moon.
The night, the meadow, flowers and rocks,
Silently charmed by the nightingale’s song.
Your words of warning, I recalled,
Avoid this love!
Behold this brook for a while!
Water mirrors timid love.
Today, you care for a glance of your lover,
But, tomorrow, your heart will belong to another.
Leave this town,
Forget this love.
How would I avoid this love,
I do not know how, I said.
How would I leave your side,
I can not now, nor ever, I said.
That first day, my heart became a bird of desire.
Like a dove, I perched on your roof,
Rocks, you cast at me,
I did not fly away.
I did not fall apart.
A prairie deer am I, you the hunter.
Round your traps I wander and wander,
For to be captured by you, to surrender.
How would I avoid this love,
I do not know how, I said.
How would I leave your side,
I can not now, nor ever, I said.
From a branch, a teardrop, falling.
A bitter moan, an owl, flying.
Tears in your eyes, gleaming.
Moon, at your love, beaming.
You fell silent, I recall.
Covered by a blanket of gloom,
I did not fly away.
I did not fall apart.
Many a night have passed in melancholy darkness.
You have abandoned your tormented lover.
You would not set foot in that alley again.
Oh, but how, but how,
Through the alley, I wandered, without you.

In That Fair World
May I be allowed,
To behold the hue of that fresh blossom
As I stand at the base of this wall
And, through this bloody, thorny fence,
This barbed wire,
May I drink a sip of spring water?
May I be allowed “Outside, In Front of the Door”
And to regain my strength,
Rest by this tree, may I?
Or, must I pass through this road,
A stranger, now and always,
Swallow centuries of “YOU MAY NOT,”
Like a dagger piercing my patient throat?
♦
In the shadow land of this vast cerulean tent,
It would have been fair,
If trees, land, water or sunshine,
Did not belong to anyone!
Or, better yet,
Belonged to all.
A world of friends, all familiar,
One big house, this globe, and its dwellers,
One family,
Bond by fibers of their souls!
Together, for one another,
With helpful hands,
Keeping pace.
In that fair world,
Green meadows have the horizon for border!
Flower gardens have walls of breeze!
With each blooming sprout,
The surging of light,
The rapture of love.
In every song,
The warmth of a caress,
The tune of compassion.
Gardeners’ smiles shine like lanterns,
Farmers’ chants soar to heavens!
♦
We toil together.
Hearts, abundant with joy of living,
Faces, fresh as gardens of miniature roses,
Eyes, teeming with love!
We sow love like seeds in soil.
We compose poetry like buds on trees!
We, and everyone alike,
Full of music,
Free of bonds,
Emancipated,
Fortunate ...

I have something to say my dear, hear my word
While your jug is full, offer a drink and be a lord
On the path of Love, Devil tempts you a lot
Come, let your heart and soul be in accord.
The song was spoiled, and the string was no more
Tambourine shout out aloud, O harp, cry with your cord.
The rosary and gown will not bring you joy
Only the wine-seller, such bargains can afford.
The wise speak from experience, as I said
You too, my son, by age will be floored.
Love did not put its chains upon the mind
Those who sought lovers, intelligence abhorred
Share with your friends your worldly goods and time
Mark my word, for friends put your life at the sword.
O wine-bearer, may your cup always be full
With your grace, bring drunken me aboard.
Joyous, in golden garments, pass us by
Cast a glance at me in rags, a kiss, a word.

The voice of one soul, in this desert...
Hello Sea, Hello Sea,
Hair freely Streaming,
Face freely revealing,
Always shinning, Always searching,
Always Mother, Always beauty
Hello Mother,
Who reflects the breeze of existence,
From each molecule of your body,
Always giving, Always enthusiast,
Always grand, Always the sea,
Hello Sea, Hello Mother,
What do you compose?
What do you play?
The crystal of your Poetry
Always shinning,
The Language of your instrument
Always charming,
What is new with you?
Call upon God, I am blue, I got the blues!
The happiness has escaped from my song
My words are broken in my tongue.
Why are you silent? you are asking,
Why not shouting out the rush of sadness?
Why not scratching the veil of darkness?
Why are you welcoming all wrong and badness?
With broken arms, with no power to fight
How would I break the darkness of night
How would I defeat the troops of sorrow?
With feet all tight, with no helping hands
Did you say "shout out"?
What does it do,
The voice of one soul, in this desert hole?
Did you say "scratch"?
Who has ever built a pathway in granite,
By digging with a fingernail?
Call upon God, I am blue, I got the blues!
In this darkness, from one of horizons
Will the sun rise, one of these nights?...

You see my state, and still increase my pain
I see your face, the need for union regain.
For my welfare, you have no care, I complain
Why do you heal me not from the sickness I disdain?
You bring me down and leave me on the earthly plane;
Return me to my home, by your side let me remain.
Only when I’m dust, your mercy can entertain;
Your flowing spirit stirs up dust of the slain.
Heartbroken of your love, from breathing I abstain
My life you destroy, yet my breathing you sustain.
In the dark night of the soul, I was growing insane,
Drinking from the cups that your features contain.
Suddenly in my arms, you appeared, clear, plain;
With my lips on your lips, my life and soul gain and drain.
Be joyful with Hafiz, with love enemies detain,
With such potent love, impotent foes self-restrain

I dreamed a dream in time gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving.
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used
And wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted.
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
As they turn your dream to shame.
And still
I dream he'll come to me
That we will live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms
We cannot weather...
I had a dream my life would be
So different form this hell I'm living
so different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.
