United Church of Christ Backs Gay Marriage

By DOUG GROSS, Associated Press Writer

ATLANTA - The United Church of Christ's rule-making body voted overwhelmingly Monday to approve a resolution that endorses same-sex marriage, making it the largest Christian denomination to do so.

The vote is not binding on individual churches, but could cause some churches to leave the fold.

Roughly 80 percent of the members of the church's General Synod voted to approve the resolution. They debated for about an hour before voting.

On Sunday, a committee of about 50 United Church of Christ representatives gave nearly unanimous approval to the resolution, recommending that the General Synod approve it. It was supported by the UCC's president, John H. Thomas.

Traditionally strong in New England, the liberal denomination of 1.3 million members has long been supportive of gays and lesbians.

The committee also voted against an alternative resolution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. A small group of conservative congregations had proposed that ammendment, and suggested that approval of gay marriage could lead to the church's collapse.

The church was criticized last year for its television advertising campaign featuring a gay couple, among others, being excluded from a church. CBS and NBC rejected the 30-second ads.

In the early 1970s, the UCC became the first major Christian body to ordain an openly gay minister. Twenty years ago, it declared itself to be "open and affirming" of gays and lesbians.

The same-sex resolution was submitted by the Southern California and Nevada Conference. The resolution specified that bisexual and transgender persons merit the same support and protections as gays and lesbians.

UCC churches are autonomous, meaning the General Synod does not create policy for its more than 5,700 congregations.

No hard data exist on how many gays and lesbians are in the UCC.

The Rev. Rebecca Voelkel of Cleveland, national interim director of the UCC Coalition for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Concerns, said about 2,000 people are on the group's mailing list and about 1,000 clergy or seminarians are gay. The denomination has 10,323 ordained ministers.

I agree with Jerkface. I don't mind same sex marriages. They have every right to live whatever way they want. It doesn't effect me in any way so why should I stand in the way of two people's happiness.

yes, are all sinners and none of us has an objective platfomr to even judge anyone else. *However, in this article, we see a direct contradiction of a church and the innate theoglogy its suppose to uphold. *The question, or Critique, is towards the church and what are its motives and why wopuld they drift away from their theological foundation. *We are not suppose to hate anyone, we are to dislike the sin itself, not the person. *and that goes for any sin.

These churches practice and follow the theology that was written thousands of years ago. You think homosexuality did not take place a thousand years ago? You think it *hasn't been taken place in the middle eastern world? Just because it isn't written about or talked about, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. So why should we ignore it? Homosexuality is in the Chaldean culture and it will always be just like it always was in every other culture.

Let me break it down for you, real simple.

False churches abadoning the Bible. *Simple enough? *As a Christian, there are other so called Christians who condone this unbiblical behavior and that is disgusting. *The point is not whether we are all sinners, we are, the point is whether we condone and approve of sin.

Sorry for using “big ass words” but I think John articulated it pretty clear though. *There are fundamental Biblical teachings that a church is suppose to abide by. *If the church choices to do otherwise, than we as Christians are to examine the church and see if they are actually following Biblical scripture. *In this case, this church is not following the Bible and doing its job of upholding God’s word. *It is very dangerous when an institution is suppose to stand for something, yet they go all out to oppose its most basic principles.

And the words of God condemns *homosexuality. It also condemns many many other sins also. But unfourtunaly today “christian’ tend to take only what is going to fit there comfortable lifestyle. And Bono I agree with what you said. God Bless.

ya your right it does say so in the bible....but it also says god loves ALL his children right? *i dont think god himself judges people nearly as much as we do as people & as society.....sex before marriage is a sin yet mostly everyone on this site has sex before marriage right?......if we as "christians" followed the word of god or the bible the world wouldnt be where it is today.
