Technically, Soma calls for meat and dairy to be avoided for the entire 50 days, so basically anything that is from the ground, as in vegetation is permitted.

There is one thing I like, and those are guleh (ܔܠܗ). There are eaten during during paloo (ܦܠܘ) which stands for palga (ܦܠܔܐ), and that is literally the word for "half" in Assyrian, symbolizing halfway point being reached during Soma Ra'ba. They are basically masheh(ܡܐܫܗ), which are baked beans, placed as stuffing in lieu of potatoes or meat (ܒܨܪܐ ܝܢ ܩܪܜܗܦܗ) within a pirashki (ܦܝܪܫܟܗ), which of course has a deep Russian history (пирожки) and was adopted by us during our stay there several decades ago, which is still notable today in the Russian names of many of our grandparents or perhaps their relatives or friends.

Very interesting. Is the pirashki like a peirogi on the outside or is it like bourag?

Well Cathy, it is actually none of the above. Peirogi is basically dumplings and bourag are basically like eggrolls. If you google pirashki, you will get the idea. Pirashki can be either oblong or round, and guleh are basically bean pirashki.

I believe that getting drunk, or any type of chemical intoxication for that matter is a sin during any season. Being under the influence of a mind altering substance reduces your inhibitions therefore making you more likely to fall into a number of temptations. I don't know where the line is drawn though. Interesting question.

No. It's NOT a sin. What a person is trying to obtain through lent is a sense of control over ones passions. Drinking is a passion. If a person could abstain from drinking during lent then all the better, but It's not a sin. The same would go for smoking, sex, etc... It's more of a personal choice. If you feel you don't want to drink during lent, don't drink.

Concerning Alcohol: Overindulging in anything, including alcohol is a sin. This means you aren't allowed to have more than 'one drink' anyways, in or out of soma. (buzzing/drunk = overindulgence of alcohol, feeling too full after a meal = overindulgence of eating, etc.)

Technically, smoking/drinking are sin, but during Soma it is especially bad, considering meat and dairy are banned, those are even more indulgeous things, and I would tend to think even sex is banned (although the Church says sex is only right if it is consentual, heteroseual, and between two people under the Sacrament of Marriage), so basically abstaining from sex during Soma is discussing a husband and wife only.

I always eat a lot of fish so the rules of Soma always confound me. It is hardly a sacrifice to eat lobster, shrimp, crabs, tuna, salmon, etc. These things are luxurious and good. So instead of abstaining from meat etc., I do a partial fast eating only bread and coffee or tea until my main meal. I also don't snack at all.
